I went to the funeral of a friend recently and have another dear friend who is dying. I started working in my studio with this sadness in my heart and this image seemed to evolve as I went. Sometimes when I paint, I start with an idea of what I want to do and the painting seems to have a mind of it's own. I try to let it happen & let it be what it needs to be. I think this painting represents our loved ones, who have gone before us, quietly waiting to gather a person into their arms & take a new soul home.
When my 89 year old mother-in-law was in her last few days, drifting in and out of consciousness, she suddenly sat up and called her husband's name & I know he was there & had appeared to her, telling her it was OK to let go, that he was waiting for her. I hope the people I have loved & lost in my life are at peace and that I'll get to be with them again someday. I think I'll keep this painting- it gives me comfort.
